Understanding Baby Reflux
Reflux is extremely common in the first year, and for most babies it is a normal, self-limiting part of an immature digestive system that resolves as they grow. It happens because the muscular valve at the top of the stomach has not yet developed the strength to stay firmly closed, so stomach contents, including acid, travel back up more easily than they will later.
For a smaller group of babies, reflux genuinely affects feeding, comfort, weight and sleep, and that is where specialist support makes a real difference. We help you tell ordinary reflux from the kind that needs more attention, and give you practical, gentle strategies to ease your baby's discomfort.
Silent Reflux vs Regular Reflux
The mechanism behind both is identical, stomach acid moving upward, and the difference is simply whether it shows. Regular reflux is visible: milk reappears at the mouth. Silent reflux gets reswallowed or sits lower in the throat, so there is no obvious mess, which is exactly why it so often gets mistaken for colic or an unexplained fussy baby.
Because there is nothing to see, silent reflux is frequently identified later, sometimes after weeks of a baby clearly struggling with no obvious cause. We help you recognise the cluster of signs, hiccups, arching, feed-time distress, congestion and disrupted sleep, and get the right support in place sooner.

Our Reflux Specialist, Summer Petrosius
Summer Petrosius is a Paediatric Speech Pathologist and an internationally certified infant reflux and feeding specialist. She brings genuine clinical depth to the reflux and feeding challenges that so often sit underneath disrupted sleep.
Summer works alongside your baby's medical care, never instead of it, adding specialist feeding and sleep strategies around whatever your GP or paediatrician recommends, so your baby is supported from every angle.
See Specialist ConsultationsHow Reflux Affects Baby's Sleep
Reflux and sleep work against each other in a particularly unhelpful way. Lying flat, the position every safe sleep guideline recommends, is exactly the position that makes acid movement easiest, so the moment of being laid down for sleep is often the moment symptoms intensify.
Babies respond by resisting being put down, waking more as discomfort builds, and sleeping better upright than in the cot. Over time this can create secondary sleep habits that outlast the reflux itself, which is why addressing the reflux early, and supporting sleep gently alongside it, tends to make everything easier.
